Financial institutions are rapidly adopting artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to boost efficiency and productivity and enhance customer experience. By detecting patterns and identifying anomalies in massive data volumes with a speed and consistency beyond human capacity, AI is becoming increasingly embedded in decision-making processes. While this unlocks transformative opportunities, it also introduces significant challenges.
One of the most pressing concerns is bias in AI models. AI systems, while powerful, can replicate or even amplify biases inherent in training data or algorithm design – an issue well established by respected researchers such as Dr. Joy Buolamwini (MIT’s “Gender Shades”) and Dr. Timnit Gebru (formerly co-lead of Google’s Ethical AI Team). These biases can lead to unfair outcomes that violate regulatory mandates and undermine customer expectations, ultimately eroding trust.
